The 2012 version of the code contains a number of increased energy efficiency requirements, accounting for an approximately 30 percent rise in energy efficiency for residential buildings over the 2006 IECC. 160m eco-friendly ‘safari lodge’ Eskbank, South of Edinburgh on confined site

Gerry and Susan Goldwyre wanted to build a 160m contemporary home in the 1.5 acre garden of their converted Victorian water tower home, which they intended to live in upon completion.
Planning was an issue due the protected nature of the site, as well as the limited space available. The house had to fit between three protected trees, and the site was further complicated by the 75 degree drop on one side to the River Esk.

Structural Insulated Panels – SIPS - are an advanced method of construction, offering superior insulation, structural strength and air-tightness over traditional construction methods or systems. SIP panels are used in floors, walls and roofs for residential, industrial, educational and commercial applications, providing ecologically friendly and energy efficient buildings.
SIP technology has been developed around composite (or sandwich) panel techniques, creating a product with excellent structural and thermal characteristics.
SIPS consist of two parallel faces - usually Oriented Strand Board, sandwiching a rigid core of Polyurethane (PU) foam or Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), making them lightweight, quick to erect and free from problems of compression shrinkage and cold bridging associated with other forms of construction. Other variations of facing materials and cores exist, but these are the most common in the UK.

At SIPs Industries, we have frequently noted that one of the main concerns clients have with SIPs is how they will perform in a house fire. For this reason, we were delighted to offer our EPS panels to the BRE for the fire tests.

The fire tests were carried out on both EPS panels and PU panels, so that in total, four tests were carried out, using designs representing a two-storey house and a multiple occupancy apartment dwelling, and lasting for 30 and 60 minutes respectively. Each test compartment measured 3mx4m, and had a floor to ceiling height of 2.4m, representing a standard room. The panels were clad on the outside with masonry, and on the inside with plasterboard.

The initial test report by Tom Lennon and Danny Hopkin was published in November 2010, and states that the fire tests; “... have confirmed the ability of a structure incorporating SIP wall panels and engineered floor joists to survive a real fire scenario with an equivalent severity of 60 minutes exposure to the standard fire curve.”

The mode of failure of the structure was a result of the floor failing, and the report emphasised that: “Such as scenario is not influenced by the SIP system and would be the same for other panelised, framed or traditional masonry construction systems.”

A full report on the test programme will be published by Communities and Local Government (CLG). We are delighted with the results of the test, which confirm that Structural Insulated Panels are no more hazardous in a house fire than traditional building methods.

Building with SIPs - On Site Part 1

SIPs Industries are specialists in manufacturing and erecting Structural Insulated Panels. The SIPs kit provides the main structure of your build, but this is only part of the full picture. This series aims to clarify what you can expect when you sign up for a SIPs Industries building, and to explain how you can help us ensure your SIPs build runs as smoothly as possible.

Before the kit arrives on site a member of the SIPS Industries team will visit your site to carry out a site survey and assess the access and egress for delivery lorries as well as the available storage space.

Some sites are more easier to access than others ...

Your should ensure that you foundations are as level as possible; this prevents time being wasted on site, as uneven foundations will need to be packed with timber to ensure that the soleplate is level.

You will need to provide a skip for any site wastage, as well as toilets and welfare facilities. The welfare facilities are usually a container which doubles as canteen space and storage for nails etc. These are required by the Health and Safety Executive, and will be needed throughout the entire build process. On site toilet facilities also ensure that the build team do not have to waste time searching for toilets, instead of working on your building.

If you can provide a power supply it will negate the need to run a noisy generator in order to charge power tools and run task lighting; this will help to keep your neighbours happy!

Sites with limited access require extra forward planning.

In an ideal world we can access the build from all sides; if space is tight careful forward planning can make a huge difference to the smooth running of the build. Maximising available storage space means fewer deliveries made by our lorry, reducing upheaval on the main street, minimising disruption to your neighbours and ensuring a fast build time.

Another project from SIPs Australia today. This was a self build for a local builder - he had been interested in SIPs for some time, and took the opportunity of building his own house to try out the technology.

With the guidance and assistance from the SIPs Industries Australia team, the client was able to install the majority of the SIPS panels himself, and had his project fully installed within a week.

He was quite happy with the end result and we look forward to working with him again in the future.

This nursery in Cumbria was a challenging build; the site is in a conservation area and on top of the World Heritage Site of a Hadrian's Wall Roman Fort, so it was essential not only that the completed build had a traditional aesthetic, but also that the building did not in any way damage the archaeological heritage of the site.

The solution was to use a modular building method, using a steel frame in place of traditional foundations and SIPs Industries panels to provide a lightweight and strong shell for the building. The project was carried out in conjunction with Reiver Lodges and EcoEstates.

The toilets needed to be highly insulated so that they could be open year round without freezing in Winter, and to touch the earth lightly. By using a modular method of construction the clients were able to ensure that there was minimal wear and tear on the site.

SIPs Industries Australia are back from the Inaugural Grand Design Live Exhibition at Sydney.

The turnout was very high, with a lot of interest in Kevin McLeod and a number of Australian presenters on the Lifestyle Channel that airs all the programs such as Grand Designs , Location Location, etc.

The SIPs stand was in the Grand Building section on the grand walkway one block back from the Grand Theatre and saw a pretty much constant stream of enquiries. The first day was a bit of a challenge at 11 hours long! Congratulations to the new team members who were thrown in at the deep end with a show only a few weeks after starting the job.

All in all the show was successful and worthwhile, with a number of good leads. Thank you to all those who took the time to visit the stand.

Grand Designs Live Australia opens tomorrow at 10am at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre and runs until Sunday 23rd. Based on the TV programme, the show has been running in the UK for several years but this is the first time it has come to Australia.

We're on site in Harrogate, putting this SIPs roof onto a new build.

These photographs were taken on Tuesday of this week. The large roof requires a lot of steel in order to support the SIPS panels.
